ALI BABA: THE GRANDFATHER OF COMEDY


 Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere, known by his stage name Ali Baba, is a popular Nigerian stand-up comedian. He was born in Warri, Delta state on the 24th of June 1964. He has a degree in Philosophy and Religious studies at the Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma formerly known as Bendel state university. He began his professional career with corporate events, appearing on television shows with the likes of Patrick Doyle, Charly Boy and Danladi Bako. He also made cameo appearances on radio shows with Bisi Olatilo, Sani Irabor and Mani Onumonmu. He also worked briefly with Dapo Adelegan of DP Lekki Limited as executive assistant in 1991.

 He registered his company in 1993, Alibaba Hicuppuray 3rd and from then on his focus was on ensuring that the perception of comedians being never do wells changed and instead is seen as a profession and a respected way of life. He has been a professional stand up comedian for the past 22 years and has in the last 13 years received several awards. He has also selected, mentored and groomed several comedians to become professionals and make a living for themselves.

In 1998, he rented billboards in strategic parts of Lagos like Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island; Osborne Road, Ikoyi and the Marina paying for two years. The message was simple and one he has come to be known by "Being Funny is Serious Business".

Till date, he is an entertainer, MC, motivational speaker, media host and a writer. He is a very creative and productive entertainer who has managed to stay creative and relevant in the industry. Many young comedians who have been able to do well in the industry owe it all to people like Ali Baba who have fought with everything they have to make the comedy industry a viable and a successful one.
